Moldy Pumpkins
It was extra warm this fall, and Halloween was on a Friday. So the last chance we had to carve jack-o-lanterns was the Sunday before. I was concerned about the pumpkins rotting in the house, so I did some research and saw a lot of good things about Vaseline. So I smeared all of the cut surfaces of the pumpkins with generous amounts of Vaseline, which was very unpleasant to do. At first it worked great. But by the day before Halloween they were starting to show signs of mold. So I decided I had to move them outside and let them brave the sunny heat. When I lifted them, I was horrified to find that the bottoms had gotten mushy and "merged" with our carpet. That took a long time to wash out.
One day after sitting outside, they were completely packed with mold, so I just turned their backs outward for Trick-or-Treat time. Something about rotten pumpkins is unbelievably disgusting, I couldn't imagine falling into one.
